DAYANA YASTREMSKA & OLEKSANDR YASTREMSKYY SECURE APOLOGY & DAMAGES FROM THE TELEGRAPH
News Reputation Protection

Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremska and her father Oleksandr Yastremskyy have received an apology and damages from The Telegraph Media Group Limited (“The Telegraph”) in settlement of a dispute relating to two articles published by The Telegraph in May 2021 (the “Articles”).

In the Articles, The Telegraph reported on allegations that Ms Yastremska and Mr Yastremskyy had engaged in an attempted cover-up after Ms Yastremska tested positive.  In June 2021, the Independent Tribunal of the International Tennis Federation found that Ms Yastremska’s positive test had been caused by a contamination event, and not by any fault, negligence or wrongdoing on her part.  Accordingly, no sanction was imposed on her.

The Telegraph have accepted that neither Ms Yastremska nor Mr Yastremskyy were engaged in a cover-up and have published apologies online and in the print edition of its newspaper, and agreed to pay them damages for the distress and reputational damage caused by the Articles.

Quote from The Telegraph’s apology: “…We apologise to Ms Yastremska and her father and have agreed to pay them damages for the distress and damage to their reputations caused by our article.”

Ms Yastremska and Mr Yastremskyy were represented by Mike Morgan, Donna BartleyTom Seamer of Morgan Sports Law, and Counsel Kirsten Sjøvoll of Matrix Chambers.
