News Anti-Doping Arbitration

Morgan Sports Law successfully acts for former 110m hurdles world champion, Sergey Shubenkov, in anti-doping proceedings brought by World Athletics.

In December 2020, Mr Shubenkov provided an out-of-competition doping control sample, which subsequently tested positive for very low levels of acetazolamide (a diuretic). As was accepted by the Athletics Integrity Unit following its own investigation, the positive test was caused by residue from medication which had been prescribed to a member of Mr Shubenkov’s family.

Following a hearing before the World Athletics Disciplinary Tribunal on 21 June 2021, Mr Shubenkov was held to have acted without fault or negligence in relation to the anti-doping rule violation and, thus, no sanction was imposed. Mr Shubenkov remains free to compete.

Mike Morgan and Tom Seamer of Morgan Sports Law acted for Mr Shubenkov.
