The Play On Podcast - Olympic Charter Rule 50
In a two-part series, the Play On podcast considers Rule 50 of the Olympic Charter, and the associated Athletes Commission Guidance, which prohibits protests or demonstrations by athletes and other personnel during the Games. The series features two special guests, Olympic Gold Medallist, Tianna Bartoletta and Brendan Schwab of the World Players Association, alongside barrister Tom Seamer and associate Nii Anteson.
Part One covers the recent furore surrounding Rule 50 in light of the swell of support for the Black Lives Matter movement in sport, and examines whether Rule 50 could be said to be an invalid restriction of the right to freedom of expression.
In Part Two, the panel discuss potential alternatives to Rule 50, whether such a rule is necessary at all, and what (if any) changes they foresee ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games.
