News Anti-Doping Arbitration

Morgan Sports Law successfully acts for South African rugby player, Mr Ashley Johnson, in anti-doping proceedings brought against him by the Rugby Football Union (“RFU”) before the National Anti-Doping Panel (“NADP”).

Summary

In March 2018, Mr Johnson was provisionally suspended from competition after being notified by the RFU that hydrochlorothiazide (a Specified Substance) had been detected in a doping control sample provided on 7 February 2018.

Although the RFU sought a minimum two-year ban, the NADP imposed a reduced suspension of six months on Mr Johnson, backdated to 7 February 2018, after accepting that the positive test was caused by inadvertent consumption of a contaminated substance.

Mr Johnson is free to resume training with immediate effect and will be free to play for his club, Wasps RFC, in time for the start of the 2018/2019 season.

Mike Morgan and Henry Goldschmidt of Morgan Sports Law acted for Mr Johnson.
